Our man-on-a-mission negotiates a busy Queen St intersection on two wheels, dodging pedestrians, cars and the odd Chihuahua – his iPod providing something suitably fast and loud. OK, so in New Zealand this was only a “partial” solar eclipse, but shooting from Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, with 90% obscuration, we were pretty close… As an eerie dusk descended around 10:15 in the morning, there was a noticeable drop in both temperature and light. We donned our solar glasses and observed the sun slowly declining to a thin orange crescent. After a three million dollar restoration, this beautiful 1945 de Havilland Mosquito was recently unveiled amidst much fanfare at Ardmore Airport’s “Launch Spectacular” last weekend. Nicknamed the Wooden Wonder – as it was constructed almost entirely of timber – it swept past a mesmerized crowd at around 600 km/h.
